MY CAR'S ON FIRE!!!
ok, not really but check this out. My car smokes.....a lot. i've been told it's time for a rebuild but i'm not convinced, here's why. i get absolutely zero smoke until at and above 4500 rpm, compression checks out fine, i'm not loosing oil, i'm not loosing coolant, and the car pulls as hard as the day i got it. anyone got any ideas? catalytic converter? egr valve? bad gas? any response at all would be helpful because i'm at a loss and so are the local rx7 guys. thx

Is it a TII? or n/a?
If it's TII it might be your turbo.

sorry, i shoulda said so but it's an n/a, i spoke to one of the rx guys in town today and he said it could be carbon burning off, could be my cat, or it could be a pinhole leak (coolant). what do you think? i don't know about the other two but if it were coolant wouldn't a lot of smoke me a big loss of coolant? also, the fact that i doesn't happen untill exactly 4500 rpm kinda bugs me. any ideas? thanks for responding so quick by the way.

If it was coolant, it would be a white smoke, and smell sweet. Go ask a friend or soemthing to rev it till it smokes, and smell the "smoke"
It's pointless actually. If its a blueish smoke, it's oil, if it's a white smoke, it's probably coolant.

Try Amsoil engine flush and see if there's carbon build up. I usually do my engine flush once a year to prevent buildups.
Also, you want to ck your ignition system (spark plugs, wires, coil) for its optimal functions.
Have fun!

i'll definately check those things out. thanks a lot folks. in the event that it is coolant, how long can i expect to be able to drive it, and are there any "band-aids" i can use to stretch the remaining life span?

Just don't over-rev it...that's my recommendations if in the event of blown water seal.
Even then, it WILL go bad.
