whats wrong with the 13brew?
 

ok 97 13b-rew, 122kms, auto
when the engine is cold(havnt tried while warm) you rev the engine a lil, or alot(mechanics, go fig.) the exhaust makes a popping noise, and the engine fires black smoke out the back, can sound like machinegun fire at around 3-3500 revs, is this fuxored apex seals? or somthing cheaper

any diagnosis would be appreciated

When was the last time the engine was tuned?

my guess japan, so probibly 1997, its only landed in nz about 7 days ago, 4 of those days its been at a mechanics

Good possibility that tune up is in order.

Is there a constant stream of black smoke?

no only when it makes the popping noise, kinda like in puffs

does it do it at idle? or only when you rev the motor? does it do it at certain RPM or the moment you rev the motor? has the motor ever been re-built?
