timing..belt or chain
just registered, but hope to be around here for awhile. i've always loved the RX7 and have looked at many in the past, but never bought one. i recently gave up motorcycling and found a fairly nice '88 convertible i'm thinking of buying to replace the "wind in your face" affect.
it has 87k miles and i'm wondering if the '88 'vert (non turbo) has a belt or chain timing system. i've googled all sorts of things and can't seem to find an answer. any help would be appreciated. the car is in pretty nice shape except for the leather seats. they will need to be re-upholstered to really make the car nice. paint, top, tires, etc. are all very nice. he's asking $3,200. thanks, Dutch |
Welcome to the forum to start. Now I will try to help you here okay. All verts offered in the US were non turbo, which is a 6 port 13B. The power was different between the S4 (86-88) 146hp & the S5 (89-91) 160hp.
No timing chain or belt on the rotary, no cams, no valves. Port timing handles the needs of these parts on our motors. Check our FAQ section under porting. I was never a fan of the vert seats, I personally would get a set of non verts or aftermarket seats over reupholstering those. |

that makes sense. years ago i had a '79 RX7, but never really worked on it much, just drove the wheels off it. so, can't say i know much about the rotary except it seems like a great engine. i agree with you on the seats, before i decided to upholster the originals, i was going to look for replacements. As me and my cousin always say are e shaft is the cam shaft and the rotors are are valves!
