my chevron project car
hey guys just thought id have a bit of a n00b introduction, tell you what im up to... and where im going
6 months ago, i bought myself a 89 chevron sports car rolling chasse... complete minus engine, engine accessories(radiator etc) and gearbox.... heres a photo of a fine example of a chevron sports car... http://www.chevron.co.nz/images/classicside.jpg ofcourse mine isnt as fine example as this one, but it still cost me us$2300, but if its a dollar not spent on preformance, then its a dollar best spent somewhere else :D then i went out and bought a 13b-rew that was pulled out of a 96 bathurst edition fd done 60,000 kms(about 40,000 miles).. it was complete, minus ecu, radiator etc and now im lining up a series 6 gearbox for $500 now the chevron is made here in NZ, a fair few get exported to japan and aus, but none that i know of make it to the US... i dont know why, im guessing you guys have your own replica lotus 7's.... they weigh in at a massive 600kg complete.... next move is to fit the engine, then go out an buy a apexi power FC, to4e custom made turbo or somthing and a big intercooler... sadly, their is such little room in the engine bay of these cars that the turbo is kinda gonna be sticking out the side of the car, but ke sera sera i have no idea what this car will be like with this sort of power... or for that matter how much power this setup will be without doing the injectors..... but yeah, if i ask a question, somehow it is going to be related to the above listed project... im told that over 300hp the chevrons chasse begins to twist a lil bit, but we will have to wait and see tell me what you think, thanks for your time cheers Psycho_Dad  [/img] |
Set up engine and tranny braces... that'll help you a bit.
|
...yeah let me just get out the playdoh and ill whip some mounts up right now =P
not as easy as it sounds |
Here's a sample of engine torque brace made by RB member for your info...

AHHHH i see now, thankyou for curing me of my ignorence, sorri about the arrogance
thats a pretty cool idea, the chevron has kinda limited amount of mounting positions tho although im sure i could rig something... i am probibly gunna use boost control, so that should take alot of the strain out, and also im gunna try to find some pretty heavy duty mounts, like landcruiser ones.... quote of the day is 'if your in control, your obviously not going fast enough" |

isnt the general rule of thumb, aslong mounts are desighned for a heavier engine, a lighter engine wont move, and thus wont put any strain on the drivetrain?
im unsure help me out here :D not many people posting in this forum... cheers Psycho_Dad |
Look into BSP chassis brace ;)
|
is that the link you sent me? i looked at it, and i envied it.. i only wish i could one day make such diner an example... im unsure tho on where my chevrons going to bend... i think it will be moreso acceleration than the physical turning of the engine... i wish i knew more... ill most definitely try to make a mount like the one in the link you sent me... its just that if i do that it costs me 200 in cert because its a chassee mod
wait and see cheers PsychoDAD |
BSP chassis are used by NASCARS for its rigididty(sp) and of course for it's weight factor.
And steering response will greatly improve, as well. |
yeah i search for bsp and nascar and it comes uip with "NASCAR, Britney Spears announce movie project...."... good news all around.. NOT!
ill keep searching though google untill i find a pic of one of these stripped chssis |
OK, here it is...
http://www.bslotcar.com/chassis.htm and here's another http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/view...r_Braces~.html The last one is for Miata, but just so you know there's one out there ;) |
jesus, thats cool, after i snap the mounts il steer towards that!
im pretty sure the mounts that ill have fabricated will hold to the 37mmx37mm steelechassis.. wait and see cheers Psycho Dad |
Bet that'll beat landcruiser one ;)
|
Damn you 2 are having a little pow wow here.. :)
|
Bring on the marshmallows...Shaggy!
|
yeah man its all on, lil biarch has to go against everything i say!
oh well, gearbox is 15 min from auction finish, see how i go cheers Psycho_Dad |

Cheers Psycho_Dad |
Settle down you 2...am I going to have to put you to in sperate coners?? :P

Man, those are kit car from NZ...
It seem to have some issues according to its newsletters... "WINDUP – Part 4(?) Well here we go again… yet another three (yes three) years have past since I last informed you all of the status of Windup’s rebuild. One of my main stipulations during this protracted rebuild has been that everything on the car article should be as neat and reliable as a modern car. Another stipulation was that all parts used should have minimal modification from standard. These two seemingly minor points have upon occasions become major hurdles that have required much head scratching to overcome for example; When remounting the old Torana back axle I decided to adopt a 4 link with reversed Watts linkage layout. I planned to use standard Toyota trailing arms and these positioned the axle centreline 55mm rearward of the original layout. To keep the wheels and guards central it was decided to extend the rear section of chassis by 100 mm . This had the additional benefit of allowing a larger fuel tank to be installed. Another hurdle was the decision to extend the scuttle by 200mm at the front to provide room for the engine management computer and other necessities like heaters and the such like. First I cut the rear section off an old bonnet and proceeded to cut it down to size so that it fitted beneath the bonnet. Then after 3 or so attempts and with much help from Steve (fibreglass fingers )Hutchison it finally looked the part. It was then up to me to fit all the "stuff" under the available space." At that newsletter was written only handful were completed... How far along is yours? |
car is complete, minus engine, engine auxilleries(including radiator), gearbox, engine mounts, and a decent diff ratio(current ratio 2.5 or somthing)... aside from that, car is complete
geabox turns up xmas day - series 6 batty one engines sitting on the floor of my living room... front housing is cracked so i have to take it off and repair/replace, i still have to buy -powerfc -t04e turbo(or maybe somthing else) -custom manifold -radiator -fuel pump and new lines -custom d/shaft and a few other bits and pieces, im guessing USD$3500 to complete cheers Psycho_Dad |
Well, good luck!
Do you have rooms to put them all into it? (no sarcasm) After finding out the dimension... It'll be a challenge, I'd figure. Because you really don't want to compromise with small rad with rotary and especially with turbo as you're thinking of slapping it on IC placement will be crucial. What size and tires are you planning on running with that car? |
good question black rocket... yeah the radiator cc's will have to be sacrificed.. so i may have to go with a thick alloy one... luckily chevrons are completely customisable... so ill be sure to have a fair bit of air ducting out the sides to swirl around the engine, its not much, but any degree will help
oil cooler will go 1st, then intercooler, then radiator.. ill set it up with alloy plates and stuff like circut cars do so that everything breathes.... exhaust has to be completely custom made so that it clears the steering collumn.... as i said it used to have a 13b so i think a 13b rew. shouldnt be too difficult... well black if you have any ideas... you know just annoying suggestions or anything, feel free to expand my mind cheers Psycho_Dad |
ok turns out it does come with engine mounts, for a 12a turbo, just have to work out how to mount the 12a turbo front plate onto the 13brew and shell bolt in easy...
oh yeah and tyres at the mo are yokahama 205/60/13's... cant go much wider or bigger unless i refabricate new rear guards... which is just fibreglassing so shouldt be too difficult if i feel the need cheer Psycho_Dad |
You'll need to modify your engine mount as you're planning on putting 13B REW. Which is different from 13B and of course 12A, BTW...
|
yeah i know, is their any way tho of adapting the 12a turbo frount cover to the 13brew? or is it just too much hard work???
cant really 'adapt' the mount since its setup to bolt onto the front cover, and the front cover of a rew lacks sufficient mounting bolts cheers Psycho_Dad |
13B REWs' cooling system chambers are designed slightly differs to sustain and reduce more heat for what it produces.
So, I personally wouldn't even think of doing that trick to defeat its purpose of having such a great motor like 13B REW. |
welll then i consider myself pwned....
|
Why? Just go to (suggestion) your local junkyard and see if you can find FD front end and see if you can somehow mod it and see.
|
good idea, i kthink finding a housing will be difficult tho, 13brews are a rare engine indeed in nz
cheers man ill have a look around Psycho_Dad |
Hope it works...
|
i appreciate your hopes and dreams
phsycho dad im pised |
I don't think your challenge is going to reach in the extreme of "dream" category ;)
Just patience and I'm telling you it's not vertue...LOL You'll find it. |
no update eh?
Hmm, was looking forward to seeing this thing completed. |
ok an update, well i became the director of a car company, i have been doing it for 2 months now, since then i have been paid for 2 weeks of that salery. have to wait untill the company gets off the ground before i can shoot serious $$$ at the car again, i think last time i was here i had a 13brew, a series 6 gbox and the car, so im just waiting to get more $$$ together, then gunna get the whole thing completed in 1 hit. i doubt ill be the one putting it together anymore, just too frickan busy. had jury service for the last week, man the stress that crap can cause you
sorry for not keeping up to date, i guess i have lost a bit of focus for now, but im 22 and now owning a company is big responsability but we are at the mo importing a 96 batty, so i have a toy car for now  cheers Psycho_Dad |
Been a long time!
Glad to hear you're doing great. Keep us updated, man! |
Awesome! Congratularions on the company. Much luck in the future, and keep us updated on the chevron!
