Well speaking from the auto side of things i know that the manual FD's are quicker. I think this is mostly due to not knowing when the car is going to change gear half the time in the auto. Im quite often left surprised or shouting at it to change gear lol.

A semi auto lever would be better but i dont think they do one for the FD.

I must admit im changing mine from auto to manual. Theres just something about changing gears that feels good about a car.

The power difference is because there is a higher drivetrain loss in the auto then in the manual transmission. The auto motor do have the correct rear counter weight when doing a light weight flywheel.

Mazda dealer parts list have different part numbers for automatic engines and manual engines. That is why I ask this question and to see what I would have to do to change to a manual tranny. So what I am seeing from the two replies the counter weight is the difference?

yes....... Yes. However all are interchangeable. Rear irons different but works. There are lots of differences in the fd motors years and options, it can be compared to ls motor options. There are a lot. but its all pretty well the same.
