Proper RX-7 and Rotary Engine Maintenance

Hey guys,

I'm considering purchasing an 1988 RX-7 Turbo II. This will be the first time I have owned a car with a rotary engine if I purchase it. It has a rebuilt motor with 15k miles on it and about 169k on the chassis. It will require a some more work to get it prefect but it's a project I'm looking forward to doing. My question is about general maintenance and up-keep of the vehicle. I've done some research in the area but found nothing substantial. After putting in time, effort and money to get the car the way I want it, it would a shame not to carry out the proper maintenance to increase the longevity of the car and it's motor. Does anyone have any advice, tips or warnings that people either forget or overlook?

Well as different as the rotary is, it does require similar maintenance to that of a piston engine. As overheating is not good in a piston engine it is really bad thing for the rotary, so keep that in mind. Considering that the car you are looking to purchase is 24 years old you should try to get a good run down of any mods, repairs & replaced parts. Obvious wear on parts should be addressed. Check things like the oil, spark plugs, bushings, wires, belts & coolant.

I not sure if you were planning to get rid of OMP & premixing, but there are more then a few that go that route. Some will say use conventional oil & some will say synthetic, I don't have an opinion on that.

I will try to help when I can. google is your friend LOL. BTW an 88 is a 2nd gen also known as a FC3S. When discussing these cars you will hear S4 (86-88 ) & S5 (89-91) just to help with any confusion.
