I have a 1985 RX-7 that has sat for five years. I now have time to work on it but I am concerned about starting it up for the first time in over five years. Can any of you give me some advice that should alleviate my fears of a blown engine.

I would lubricate rotor housing with Lucas oil and let sit for a while then do an ATF clean using a spare plugs.

How interesting as I am going thru the same situation with a 1982 that has sat for 15 years with 9100 miles on it.
First I emptied the gas tank, which I later removed and am boiling out. I next checked the intake for critters, then the exhaust for critters. Mine was in a garage so no issues at all. I then added seafoam in the gas tank and added about 4 gallons of gas. I removed the fuel line and pumped some gas thru it. I removed the top of the carb and cleaned out the bowls and cleaned off the floats. One of my floats were sticking and pupmed lots of gas in the carb initially. I removed each plug individually and turned over the motor to pump out any bad gas, and there will be alot of it. I replaced each plug. Checked the oil, and antifreeze. Checked the brake fluid, installed a new battery. I then added some seafoam to thru the carb. I let that sit overnight. I already knew it wasn't carbon locked as I had turned it over with the plugs out. The following day I fired it up, started in about 4 minutes and ran very very smoothly. I let it run about 15 minutes, then cool down. Checked for leaks and or smoke. I restarted it and drove it 12 miles to my home garage. I am now in the process of rebuilding the carb, blowing out the gas lines, changing all fluids, and new tires. So far for me all is going well. Just go slow. Good luck!
